The art of reverse painting on glass was brought to Peru by the Spaniards who settled there in the 15th century. Local artisans emulated the style and in time, the technique became recognized as a Peruvian craft tradition. Here, Peruvian artisan Gelacio Giron paints ethereal butterflies on the hinged lid of a handcrafted wooden jewelry box. The blue, black, and pink winged creatures flit amidst delicate blooms on a background of ochre and gold. The box has a single compartment.
