Carved from pinewood and painted by hand, this petite wall plaque is inspired by the Sacred Heart of Jesus. Devotion to the Sacred Heart is devotion to Jesus himself. It is crowned with a flame, symbolizing Christ's burning love for humanity, and was first venerated in 11th-century Benedictine and Cistercian monasteries. Jaime Hernandez covers the image with an assortment of milagritos, or 'little miracles.' These diminutive charms represent petitions or answered prayers and depict animals, possessions, and even body parts that have been healed. In Mexico, such charms are often given to the image of Christ or a saint in gratitude for miracles performed.
