A band plays alongside a scissors dancer within this retablo from Peru. Crafting his subjects from plaster of Paris within a tornillo wood box, Julio Gallardo reflects on one of this country's most exciting and treasured traditions, depicting the famed Danza de las tijeras, where a dancer plays a pair of scissors-like instruments while performing. The artisan paints the figurines with an array of vibrant colors, adding floral motifs to the outside of the box.
